MY Esperanza in Svalbard

Photo | 2012-03-27

The MY Esperanza sits in the Arctic Ocean against a floe of sea ice north of Svalbard. The ship stopped here to launch an ROV (remote Operated Vehicle) to film life in the ocean and the sea bed under the ice. As climate change causes the Arctic sea ice to recede, Greenpeace has sailed north of Svalbard, to survey the poorly understood Arctic Ocean seabed and to observe and record on the surface the diverse wildlife that has adapted to survive in this unique and harsh environment.
