Opening a can of tuna in front of a Seoul supermarket

Photo | 2012-09-10

Last week Greenpeace activists in Seoul Sangam-Dong gathered in front of a local supermarket. Their aim was to convey little known facts about canned tuna to consumers. For example, did you know global estimates put FAD associated by-catch (such as turtles, sharks and whales) as high as 182,500 tonnes annually? The massive boats and equipment now used by fishing companies have also been incredibly destructive to tuna populations, as well as the sustainability of the oceans.

If current fishing trends continue, scientists warn that all commercial fish will disappear by 2048. Promoting sustainable fisheries and supporting the set up of marine reserves is the only way forward if we want to protect fish numbers.
