Contaminated Waters in Pearl River Delta Region

A tributary flowing through the city of Shenzhen, is highly contaminated by industrial discharge. The river shows no sign of life. The Pearl River Delta has become one of the leading economic regions and a major manufacturing center of China. Greenpeace collected and analysed 25 samples of waste water discharges and sediments from five industrial sites located throughout the Pearl River Delta region. A diverse range of hazardous chemicals were found, including high levels of heavy metals such as beryllium, copper and manganese.
