"Black" Rainstorm in Hong Kong Foreshadows Crisis

On June 7, 2008, Hong Kong issued the rare BLACK rainstorm signal for what would be one of the city's severest thunderstorms to date. In just one hour, the city was inundated with a record-breaking 145.5mm of rain, houses were flooded, and the estimated financial damage to the city was over half a billion Hong Kong dollars.

Severe storms like these will only become more frequent with climate change. Heavy rainfall and floods – as well as the high economic damage associated with them — will all become commonplace, not anomalies, if we do not take action on climate change immediately.
