Greenpeace activists among those who demonstrated during a march at the People's Summit at Rio+20 for Social and Environmental Justice.

When Premier Wen Jiabao took to the stage at Rio+20 Earth Summit we were really pleased to see that he not only addressed the importance of sustainable development and global corporation, but also promised China will donate money to aid less developed countries.

Wen Jiabao said "sustainable development is the only choice" and we hope he backs up these words by delivering an energy revolution in China rather than rubberstamp a polluter's charter here at Rio+20.

Having become the world's second biggest economy and a major polluter, China's miraculous economic development has been haunted by an environment nightmare in the course of the past 20 years. China should, and also has, the capability to lead the change that western powers like the US and Canada are shamefully blocking.

What is missing is not strong political will from Beijing but concrete actions at lower level and corporates that will lead to actual change. Rio+20 is a reminder for Chinese policy makers at all levels that time waits for no one in the race against a fast deteriorating environment.
