Voice out for Mandatory labelling on GE food

Feature Story - 2008-06-12
Consumers have just won the battle in nutrition labelling legislation. But the fight for consumer's right to know has yet to finish. On 8th July, Hong Kong's Legislative Council will hold a committee meeting on Food Safety and Environmental Affairs to discuss the labelling scheme for GE food. Send your wish for mandatory labelling immediately to the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr. York Chow, and the Consultant to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Dr. Ho Yuk-yin, calling on the government to announce a timetable for mandatory labelling on GE food.

Greenpeace exposed the latest GE food testing results. It reveals GE ingredients are unanimously found in all 7 tofu samples from local supermarkets. Greenpeace investigated over 800 pre-packaged food items and found none of them labelled as recommended by the HKSAR Government’s Voluntary Labelling System for GE Foods. Implemented since 2006, the voluntary labelling system proves to be a complete failure as manufacturers and distributors are not obligated to provide the GE information. In the same investigation, it is found that one sample, Chung Hua Tofu, a Taiwan imported from PARKnSHOP, does not indicate it contains GE ingredients on its package label. The same product selling at city’super, however, indicates its GE ingredients on the original Taiwan package label as it adheres with Taiwan legislation.

Act now!

Greenpeace has been fighting for mandatory GE food labelling since 1999. Currently 54 countries and regions have implemented such labelling. Past opinion polls also found that over 90% of Hong Kong citizens supported the scheme.

Over these eight years, the Hong Kong SAR government has been playing down the risk of GE food and delayed legislating for mandatory GE labelling by claiming there is a lack of international consensus. Last year, the government put forward a voluntary labelling scheme, which has been proved a failure. Only a mandatory labelling scheme can protect the rights of consumers.

Please immediately sign the following letter to the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr. York Chow, and the Consultant to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department's Consultant Dr. Ho Yuk-yin, calling on the government to announce a timetable for mandatory GE food labelling scheme.
