Greenpeace planted a recycled paper forest at the Beijing International Book Fair as it officially opened its “Book Lovers for Forests” campaign on the Chinese Mainland.
Our recycled paper forest at the Beijing International Book Fair
We are reaching out to book lovers, authors and publishers to help us protect our ancient trees and support the use of forest-friendly paper in the publishing industry.
Every two seconds man destroys an area of forest the size of a football field. Some 40 percent of trees logged globally are pulped into paper.
Our booth at the fair was welcomed enthusiastically by both publishers and readers. We built a forest out of recycled paper and showed people how making books out of recycled or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-approved paper could help protect our forests and help the environment by saving water, energy and reducing waste.
We also encouraged people to vote for their favourite author and ask him or her to support forest-friendly paper.
The fair, which is the biggest gathering of China's publishing industry, was held between 1 and 4 September in Tianjin, just east of Beijing.
Green publishing saves trees
Our Books Campaign has been running since 2000.
Since its start in Canada more than six million books have been printed on eco-friendly paper and more than 10 major publishers, including Lonely Planet and Random House (Canada, UK and the US) have agreed to gradually switch to using eco-friendly paper.
Many popular authors have supported our Books Campaign, including Harry Potter creator JK Rowling.
The Chinese translation of Chilean author Barrios Enrique's "Ami, Child of the Stars" came out this summer and sold more than 30,000 copies in the first two weeks. It was the first book to be published in China that was printed on 100 percent recycled paper.
Our Book Lovers for Forests mini-site (Chinese only) will soon also be available in English.
