Greenpeace International activists branded a South Korean ship "illegal" in Mauritius as it is accused of unlawfully fishing in West African waters. The FV Premier, owned by South Korea's largest tuna company, Dongwon Industries was prevented from off-loading its catch in Port Louis. Greenpeace is calling for the South Korean government to recall the vessel for investigation. The peaceful protest coincides with Greenpeace International's Indian Ocean Ship Tour, where a team on board the MY Esperanza investigate illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.

Greenpeace recently attended the 8th science committee meeting of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, held on August 10 in Busan, South Korea. All the delegations from governments, industries and scientists gathered and discussed the tuna stock status to make recommendations to the tuna committee later this year. Our passionate activists were there to remind them that tuna stocks are declining due to overfishing and to express their hope they will make the right decision for the future of our oceans. More than 60% of the world's tuna are caught in the Western and Central Pacific oceans.

Planet Street Painting artists were commissioned by Greenpeace to make a giant 3D painting on the sidewalk of the World Fashion Centre. The piece highlights how global fashion brands have turned us into unwitting polluters .

We tested products that we knew contained residues of toxic substances by washing them under conditions that simulated domestic laundering. Then we measured how much of the chemicals remained in the clothing. In this way we could identify the percentage of "washed out" chemicals which end up being flushed into our rivers, lakes and seas, where they break down to form even more hazardous substances.

Beautiful Hainan Gibbons endangered due to deforestation

Hainan's rainforests are home to the world's rarest primate, the Hainan gibbon, of which it is believed that only 23 remain in the wild. "When you have just 23 of a particular animal species left in the wild, that says we humans aren't being good stewards of the environment," said Greenpeace forests campaigner Yi Lan. "A lack of enforcement brought about this rapid loss of rainforest and it's about to bring about the extinction of a species."

According to a Greenpeace study released this week, Hainan province's rainforests in central mountain region have been disappearing at a rate of about 200,000 square meters every day for the past ten years because of illegal logging and plantation establishment. That amount of deforestation is equivalent to losing 27 football fields of rainforest every day for the past 10 years.

Hong Kong campaigns manager Gloria Chang recently ended a one week trip on Greenpeace's Arctic Sunrise which traversed Norway's Warbah Islands. The expedition included leading independent ice scientists from the University of Cambridge who were there to test Arctic sea ice thickness. The trip revealed the second-lowest sea ice minimum on record - a devestating consequence of global climate change.

Crizel Valencia was born on Clark Air Base, in the Philippines, and was diagnosed with leukemia when she was five, in 1999. She was part of a "cancer cluster" in the area of the abandoned U.S. military bases where she was born and lived. Her disease was consistent with symptoms of people exposed to persistent organic pollutants that were found contaminating the ground and water.

In 1991, after the eruption of mount Pinatubo, the Philippines government rejected a proposal to extend the 90-year-old U.S. military bases agreement. The U.S. abandoned their bases in the Philippines, leaving behind them a toxic legacy.

The volcanic disaster combined with typhoon Yunya made thousands of Filipinos homeless, and they found refuge in camps on the former military grounds. They didn't know that the water they were drinking and the ground they were walking on was contaminated.

One hundred ice children are melting in the heat of the Beijing sun. They are made of the ice of the Qinghai-Tibetan glaciers, and their melting symbolizes what may happen to our future.

One hundred ice children are melting in the heat of the Beijing sun. They are made of the ice of the Himalayan glaciers, which are the source of Asia's major rivers, from the Yangtze to the Ganges. The glaciers in the Greater Himalayan are melting faster than anywhere else in the world. Their disappearance threatens the water supply of more than a billion people.

Greenpeace China and India collected meltwater from the Himalayan glaciers, which we then gave to ice sculptors. One hundred days later, the statues were simultaneously unveiled in Beijing and Delhi.

Beijing's 100 ice children were shown in Ditan Park, the Temple of the Earth where the emperor once prayed for fair weather and good harvests. Individually handcrafted, each ice child is unique, with different gestures. But they began to melt almost immediately – a stark reminder of the fragility of our future, and our children's future, without immediate action on climate change.
