Amsterdam – Greenpeace has condemned the revelation that Volkswagen has understated CO2 emissions on about 800,000 cars in Europe, calling for a full and independent inquiry into the carmaker’s operations.
Volkswagen’s statement sent the company's shares plunging and comes after US regulators widened this week investigations into VW’s rigged diesel car emissions to include more models from Audi and diesels from Porsch, more than a month after the dieselgate air pollution scandal erupted.
“When will this litany of lies end? Volkswagen is not only risking public health by cheating on NOx emissions standards, the ‘irregularities’ in the CO2 emissions also show how the company is complicit in and profiting from climate change. This is the final straw for a company that can no longer be trusted,” Greenpeace Germany Mobility Campaigner Daniel Moser said.
“Governments and regulators around the world must end this continued deception and ensure Volkswagen upholds emissions standards, rather than bow to industry lobbying and ease regulations like European governments did. Governments must improve car testing systems to keep dangerous polluting cars off our roads and lead the transition to an emissions-free and community-friendly transportation system.
“While Volkswagen tries to rescue its reputation, it continues to hide behind broad statements that the safety of its cars are not in question. What VW fails to understand is that its actions have not only put lives at risk, it is negligently or at worst deliberately accelerating climate change. Greenpeace is demanding Volkswagen be held fully accountable.”
