Media briefing – GMO debate. Ad hoc working group and Environment Council

On 4 December 2008, EU environment ministers have to agree on measures to reform the EU’s authorisation system for genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The last preparatory meeting before the Council, where national experts have to finalise their recommendations is 24 November, 2008.

Austrian report: Biological effects of transgenic maize NK603xMON810

A study published today by the Austrian government identified serious health threats of genetically modified (GM) crops. In one of the very few long-term feeding studies ever conducted with GM crops, the fertility of mice fed with GM maize was found to be severely impaired, with fewer offspring being produced than by mice fed on natural crops. Considering the severity of the potential threat to human health and reproduction, Greenpeace is demanding a recall of all GM food and crops from the market, worldwide.

The report is divided into 10 regional reports, with a global summary. It demonstrates how a 'business as usual' scenario is not an option if we are to attain a secure and stable energy supply.

GMO orientation debate - Environment Council 20 October 2008

On Monday 20 October, EU environment ministers will have a policy debate on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The French Presidency has launched a debate on the review of the EU's GMO authorisation system. Representatives from each member state have already met three times in an ‘ad hoc working group on GMOs’ in order to prepare today’s orientation debate. Ministers will discuss the preliminary outcomes of these meetings and start working towards the adoption of final conclusions at the 4 December environment Council.
