Energiaklub and Greenpeace appeal the authorisation of Paks II environmental license

Sajtóközlemény - szeptember 30, 2016
Budapest, 30 September 2016 – The Baranya County Government Office has authorised the environmental license for the planned Paks II nuclear power plant. Previously, Energiaklub and Greenpeace had commented on the documents of the Environmental Impact Study (EIS), and found it deficient and unclear in a number of vital points. Nevertheless, the EIS, on which the environmental license is based, fails to include any substantial modifications regarding the points in question. The two organisations are taking the case to the court of second instance.

The environmental licensing procedure of the planned Paks II NPP started in December 2014. Energiaklub and Greenpeace have taken part in the authorisation procedure as clients ever since the beginning. Both organizations had studied the documents of the Environmental Impact Assessment submitted by MVM Paks II Ltd., and sent the Baranya County Government Office their comments [1, 2] to be taken into account in the authorisation process, as required by the relevant legislation.

On 29 September 2016, the Baranya County Government Office authorised the Paks II environmental license. However, the environmental study thus accepted still leaves a number of vital questions unclear, and makes numerous unfounded statements. Therefore, Energiaklub and Greenpeace will act on the appropriate legal possibilities.

“Our aim is to get detailed answers which are satisfactory to the general public to our questions regarding the Environmental Impact Study. We are still convinced that Paks II would be polluting, dangerous and highly expensive, and that it is a dead-end project for Hungary in terms of environmental, economic and social aspects alike”, said Zsuzsanna Koritár, Energy policy expert of Energiaklub.
