In November 2004, 'Rainbow Warrior', the legendary flagship of Greenpeace, toured the Eastern coast of India to raise awareness about the need to protect the endangered creatures, fragile habitats and rich marine ecosystems of the Bay of Bengal.
On this, her third, voyage to India the Rainbow Warrior visited both
Chennai and Paradip. The crew was witness to an overwhelming spirit of
participation as several different groups and coastal communities came
onboard to visit.
During this tour, Greenpeace focussed on the
Gulf of Mannar and the
Bitharkanika Sanctuary, highlighting the biodiversity and the threats
these iconic marine hotspots face. The mainstays of the tour were also
dialogues on the management of network of marine reserves, an
introduction to seamounts - the submerged mountains of our seas.
The Rainbow Warrior provided a unique platform for the convergence of a
cross-section of groups and communities directly involved in the
protection of our seas. Bearing in mind the importance of reaching out
to youngsters and raising awareness, the tour involved more than 2500
people, including school and college students, eco-clubs and other
concerned citizens.
Part of the Rainbow Warrior's tour was to enable a signigicant
fact-finding mission; a multi-disciplinary team was involved in the
research and documentation of the mysterious phenomenon of
mass-congregation of Olive Ridley Turtles off the coast of Orissa.
