Symposium on "Management of Marine Reserves - The Challenges and way forward"
The symposium witnessed the proactive participation of over 30 groups
and 50 individuals - environmental groups, institutions and NGOs, state
authorities and concerned nodal departments, fishery forums, unions and
associations, film-makers and environmental enthusiasts. Presentations
were made on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Orissa, the Sunderbans
and the Central Empowered Committee's directives regarding Orissa and
the Olive Ridleys and Lacunae in the (Wildlife Protection) Act. The
symposium provided a platform to deliberate on the Sethu Samudram Canal
Project. The international experiences of Greenpeace with respect to
Marine Reserves were shared on this platform.
Public Outreach - Various programmes were conducted such as
photographic exhibitions, film shows and focused and interactive
discussions to introduce the wonders of the marine world to interested
citizens and students. The ship's open days elicited an overwhelming
response with more than 2500 people visiting the ship. The warrior
provided a platform for other groups to profile their organizations and
participate in the ongoing programmes.
