Engagement Director

Overall purpose

The Engagement Director will be responsible for designing and driving the audience engagement strategy behind all the activities of Greenpeace in India by integrating communications and mobilisation activities, and creating opportunities for a variety of audiences to take action towards delivering campaign outcomes and concrete change. The primary purpose of this job is to maximise the organisation’s ability to connect with people and deepen their engagement with our campaigns, in order to achieve key organisational objectives.

This is an exciting time to join Greenpeace in India, particularly in this senior leadership role, as we are currently developing and implementing projects as part of a long-term framework that lays special emphasis on changing mind-sets through public engagement as a key element to achieve environmental conservation.

The Engagement Director will lead a team of media and digital experts in developing and delivering a strategy, which will complement, lead or augment Greenpeace’s campaigns and fundraising. The position will also be responsible for strengthening and building a team with the necessary skills and oversight to create bold public-engagement strategies, and innovative content to gain mindshare for the activities that are core to Greenpeace in their efforts to enhance sustainability, protect the environment and the planet that we live in.

The role will be part of the Senior Management Team and report to the Executive Director of Greenpeace in India.

The primary location for the role will be in Bengaluru, India.

Compensation: INR 19.64 CTC + benefits

Main Responsibilities

1. Strategic Direction:  Define the Engagement Strategy, design and guide ambitious engagement-driven campaigns that will increase our supporter base, and deepen our relationship with volunteers, supporters and donors, through innovative communication initiatives using all channels including traditional and new media, digital and social media, and offline events.

2. Audience Management: Develop and apply metrics to test, monitor and improve offline/online mobilization and engagement of quality non-financial and financial supporters, and ensure quality control by setting standards, mentoring, training, monitoring and evaluating projects.

3. Internal Leadership: Participate as a member of the Senior Management Team and contribute to the overall strategy of the organization, act as the champion for audience-focused communications with campaign teams and refine relationships with key audiences, and support fundraising strategies including identifying new opportunities.

4. Team Management: Lead a team of passionate and dedicated Engagement staff and foster a collaborative, supportive, creative and innovative approach to all communications and engagement. Provide pastoral performance management through objective setting, standards for tasks, monitoring, evaluation, feedback and skills development.
5. Budget Management: Develop, monitor and implement the engagement department budget and facilitate reporting to the Senior Management Team, Executive Director and the Board.

6. Human Resources (HR): Contribute to the implementation of the HR strategy of Greenpeace in India, and ensure that the policies, procedures and structures are followed to recruit, induct and retain the Engagement Team, and ensure that professional growth is fostered for direct line-managed team members through timely interventions and feedback.

7. Compliance: Ensure that the Engagement team complies with all relevant requirements and procedures of Greenpeace in India, Greenpeace International and external agencies to optimize their health and safety (duty of care), and protect the image and integrity of Greenpeace in India as well as globally.

8. Reporting: Ensure timely reports to the Executive Director and as required to the Senior Management Team and the Board of Greenpeace in India.

9. Global Framework: Collaborate on global engagement initiatives and maintain a detailed knowledge of global campaigns and position it in India as needed and relevant. Develop, liaise and maintain relationships with Greenpeace International and Global Engagement leaders, colleagues across other National & Regional Offices, and effectively represent the Indian team in global and regional contexts. Represent Greenpeace at high-level external forums when required.

Candidate Profile

Training and Knowledge:

  • Masters/Post graduate qualifications in marketing, advertisement, communications, media studies / journalism is desirable.
  • Knowledge of new technologies and digital tools.
  • Understanding of the media, development, environmental conservation and political landscape.
  • Understanding of supporter segmentation and supporter journeys / loyalty strategies.
  • Knowledge of new technologies and digital tools of communications and mobilization.


  • A mature and seasoned professional with 5 years of experience working in large multicultural organisations.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a management position and directly leading teams.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in at least one of the following - creative marketing, media/communications, offline/online mobilization, and a passion for digital communication technology.
  • Track record of managing complex teams, multiple projects and dealing with diversity.

Other requirements:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is imperative.  Hindi and any other Indian language will be an added advantage.
  • Willingness to travel frequently.
  • Strong understanding of, and buy-in to Greenpeace campaigns and a commitment to Greenpeace’s values of direct action, non-violence, internationalism, independence, and a determination to protect the natural world and promote peace.
