Even with a coastline of almost 8000kms and 15 million people who depend on it for their lives and livelihoods, protection of India's oceans and its resources have not been a priority area for the Indian government so far. The voices of those whose lives and livelihoods are dependent on the sea must be heard and that includes coastal communities, civil society to ensure that effective but equitable measures are put in place.
