Maharashtra has the dubious distinction of being the only state in the country to favour water access for industry over agriculture especially till 2011. As of 2012, more than 80,000 Megawatt of power plants are proposed in Maharashtra, most of them in the interior districts of the state. This creates a massive demand for water from the rivers and reservoirs.
