March 19, 2012: Greenpeace today condemned undemocratic arrest of the local people protesting against the commissioning of the Koodankulam nuclear power plant. The environmental watchdog alleged that Jayalaitha’s decision comes due to intense pressure from the Centre; the Chief Minister had earlier assured the protesters that she will address their concerns before commissioning the plant .
Reacting to Jayalalitha's cabinet decision, Karuna Raina from Greenpeace India said:
"The people who live near Koodankulam nuclear power plant were hopeful that Jayalalitha would stand with the people and help address their valid concerns, it is very unfortunate that the Chief Minister could not stand against the pressure from the center to approve the nuclear power plant."
"Greenpeace condemns the large scale deployment of police force to arrest people as well as restrict their movements. The concerns of the protesters are not addressed and they have every right to protest. This undemocratic crack down must stop."
