Greenpeace India began its work by setting up Greenpeace Environment Trust (GPET) in 2001. In 2002, a separate entity called the Greenpeace India Society (GPIS) was created and registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act. Both Greenpeace Trust and Society have similar objectives of protecting India’s natural environment through campaigns. Greenpeace India thrives to ensure high level of governance, transparency and accountability through financial, environmental and statutory credibility. Crowdfunding and donations from individuals is the main source of income, which is  utilised in the campaigns and programme activities that Greenpeace India runs.
