BANGALORE, India — More than 500 Bangaloreans participated in 'The Green Run- Energy Revolution Now' Marathon to highlight the threat of climate change and the urgent need to implement energy efficiency and renewable energy options to address this threat.

Rehan Poncha, Shikha Tandon, Nisha Millet,Ashish Ballal and Ashwini Nachappa participate at 'The Green Run' 9 km Marathon for an Energy Revolution in Bangalore.

Bangalore is already reeling under rising temperatures, having measured roughly 22 degrees centigrade only a few years ago as opposed to 33 degrees today, during the same time of the year. We are at a stage where we cannot settle for half measures, we need an Energy [R]evolution”, said Brikesh, climate activist from Greenpeace.

The 9 km marathon was organised by M.S. Ramaiah Institute for Management, Greenpeace and Radio Indigo 91.9 FM with the agenda of propagating a Citizen oriented Energy [R]evolution in Bangalore, and the need for Bangalore to emerge as a leader in renewable energy.

“We want the citizens of Bangalore to know that it is high time they started becoming energy efficient. Something as simple as replacing all the incandescent bulbs with CFLs and LEDs will actually overcome the peak power shortage in Bangalore. We all really need to take immediate proactive steps”, said Nisha Millet, who participated in the marathon.

The nine-kilometre run, which started and culminated at the MSRIM campus, saw the participation of various sports celebrities like Nisha Millet, Rehan Poncha, Ashish Ballal, Shikha Tandon, and Ashwini Nachappa. “There are enough sources of renewable energy, solar, wind, geothermal, which if tapped and exploited could light up the planet without setting the one planet we have on fire.”, added Brikesh.

During the course of the race, participants and ‘torchbearers’ for a green and sustainable environment were periodically reminded of the ‘nine commandments’ that have to be adhered to in order to successfully mitigate climate change. “The commandments include the fundamentals requiring citizens to save energy, but also pledge to replace inefficient appliances and shift to renewables in their day-to-day lives, which are not in any manner dependent on coal.”, said Rahul Verma, Management student from MSRIM.
