Given the pride and care with which the nation has tended this flame in memory of its wartime soldiers, the Amar Jawan Jyoti seemed a fitting venue from which to remind the nation that it must also Remember Bhopal.
The vigil takes place in New Delhi, 2nd December, 2004.
As dusk fell on the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Disaster,
literally hundreds of candles were lit in front of the India Gate,
bearing a simple message - No More Bhopals. This testament to the
courage of the Bhopalis, the enormity of their losses and the
fortitude with which they have campaigned for justice for 20 years,
threatened to eclipse the Amar Jawan Jyoti with its intensity, and
the candles continued to burn long after the last visitor to the
India Gate had left.
