Solar Generation celebrates the spirit of youth against climate change with the historic launch of the Totem of resistance.

Press release - October 24, 2006
BANGALORE, India — Solar Generation joins hands with young people from across Bangalore celebrating youth resistance against climate change. Solar Generation is the youth-wing of Greenpeace India demanding clean energy now! It was launched on February 16th 2005 in Bangalore at the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Park.

'TOTEM POLE’ an embodiment of youth spirit and resistance

The launch of ‘TOTEM POLE’ is a part of their constant efforts to bring home the reality of climate change among people, particularly the student community. The Totem Pole is an embodiment of youth spirit and resistance.  It will visit various campuses during its historic tour of the globe, beginning at India with the message of climate change and demands to switch to renewable energy.

“The Totem pole will be our spokesperson and our activist. It will visit college campuses of Bangalore and try to reach out to the youth, acting as a mirror in which they see themselves as powerful partakers in the fight against Climate Change.” said Salil Mukhia, Coordinator of Solar Generation.

The Totem of Resistance has been designed and sculpted by members of Solar Generation from Chitra Kala Parishad Academy. The embodiment of youth spirit appears in bold symbols on the totem. ‘We wanted to express the aggression and the conscience of youth. It was a difficult task for us to come to an ideal representation of youth, but this was by far the most we had to say,’ comments Senthil, a student from the Chitra Kala Parishad Academy.

The launch of Totem Pole was supported by some of the most popular bands from the city. As Akshay Vishwanath puts it, ‘music has always been at the forefront of all revolutions and with the musicians on our side, we have much to do now.’ The bands include Synaps, The Green Apple Affair, The Solar Generation Band and the Schikados. The concert itself was kicked off by our very own SolarGeneration band The Schikados played next, followed by The Green Apple Affair. The concert was wrapped up by an electrifying performance by Synaps.  The fight against climate change has begun and with these young people set out on a clean and a Sustainable future seems to emphasize the growing movement that is in the air.
