Proliferation dangers in Northeast Asia

April, 2005 As delegates to the Non-Proliferation Treaty prepared for their meeting at the United Nations, leading experts from Korea and around the world gathered at a seminar in Seoul to share information, and solutions, on the increasingly dangerous situation in Northeast Asia. The seminar was sponsored by Greenpeace International, the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements, and the Peace Forum for North East Asia in the 21st century. Fallout victims of the Pacific: Tony de Brum

Tony de Brum grew up in the Marshall Islands under the shadow of atmospheric nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific. This is a speech he presented to the Non Proliferation Treaty review conference in 2005 about the plight of radiation victims in the Marshalls and other island nations. The Rainbow Warrior evacuated residents of the contaminated island of Rongelap in the Marshalls in 1985 to a new home, shortly before the ship was sunk by agents of the French government for her opposition to nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific.

This Review examines the North-East Asia civil nuclear infrastructure of nuclear power reactors, fuel fabrication and reprocessing plants and, more generally, how the nuclear know-how might be deployed to procure sufficiently high quality materials to build up a nuclear weapons arsenal.
