Stone Age car lobby exposed

Fred and Wilma Flintstone kindly lent their 'vintage' car to some of our activists for the day. We wanted to drive it to the European Parliament and deliver a stone tablet bearing the logos of Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes alongside the message "Driving climate change". The car industry is well and truly stuck in the stone age, with potentially dire consequences for the climate.

10 April 2008 - PARIS, FRANCE Greenpeace activists parody French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel as bride and groom on the Champs Elysée in Paris. With this parody wedding, Greenpeace is highlighting the danger that the Franco-German partnership will result in very weak European regulations, benefiting a German car industry that is both influential and dirty. Greenwash can't hide the car industry's true colours

One of the biggest events in the car industry's calendar, the ongoing Geneva Car Show is awash with companies talking green, talking 'climate control'. When Greenpeace looked under the bonnet of the of the industry PR green machine it found the same old engine of climate destruction.

As automobile shows opened in Brussels and Vienna today, Greenpeace challenged the European car manufacturers to stop undermining a European proposal for more fuel efficient cars, and instead take real action to lower the climate impact of their fleets. In Brussels Greenpeace activists displayed banners depicting car manufacturers as the wooden puppet Pinocchio, dismissing their attempts to appear green as mere PR tactics. Enlarge Image

It seems you can't turn anywhere at a motor show these days without numerous manufacturers green claims competing for attention. But take a peek under the green hood and the industry has a huge, dirty, lobbying engine still stuck in reverse.
