Take action to help stop illegal logging

Greenpeace volunteers took action against ancient forest destruction by blockading the UK government's environment department with over a tonne of plywood from China and hanging a banner reading BAN ILLEGAL TIMBER. The action followed a major investigation uncovering a criminal trail of illegally logged timber from Papua New Guinea, 'laundered' through China and imported into Europe.

Dear Commissioner, Louis Michel,

A staggering 80% of the world's ancient forests have already been destroyed or degraded and illegal and destructive logging is threatening much of what remains. These forests support thousands of species of plant and animals and millions of forest dwelling people.

International logging companies and timber traders are getting away with selling illegally and destructively logged timber throughout Europe.  Instead of being punished, they are allowed to profit from their crimes and continue to distort the market with their cheap stolen timber.

As a major consumer of timber, the Member States of the European Union (EU) play a key role in fuelling the international demand for timber products from illegal and destructive logging.

You claim that voluntary measures are the best way of tackling illegal logging.  The European Parliament, representing citizens throughout the EU and over 70 members of Europe's timber industry, including IKEA and B&Q disagree with you.  And so do I.  I believe the EU should immediately stop importing illegal timber and am shocked to hear that currently the EU is failing to stop this practise.

As a consumer I don't want to be a part of this forest crime and I want to be assured that the wood products I buy do not contribute to the destruction of the world's last ancient forests.

I'm writing to ask you to immediately introduce comprehensive legislation to stop the import of illegal timber products into Europe and promote sustainable forest management worldwide.
