I came to Greenpeace late in life - or so my friends and colleagues tell me - after a career as a TV journalist in the UK and Northern Ireland.

Telling stories has been my life and my passion and the chance to combine my skills with campaigning for Greenpeace has been a joy and a privilege for me.

I am nervous about what we will find in Iraq. I have seen and reported on some hideous acts of violence in my past career, but this is a different kind of violence. The callousness of the failure to act to help the people affected by radiation contamination is truly appalling and must be ignored no longer.

There are risks for us going to Iraq, we do not know how we will be greeted and treated. But we go with a determination to show what is going on, help and perhaps make a difference to the innocents. I have had butterflies in my stomach for days now - fearing what might happen and what we might find. But we are doing the right thing at Tuwaitha - which is more than can be said for the occupying forces.

I gave up a trip to climb Kilimanjaro to go to Iraq - a trip of a lifetime for me. But there are families in Iraq who risk no life at all if nothing is done for them - together we can stand up and make a difference - and that will be more of a lifetime achievement for me and the rest of the team, than any mountain top could be.
