Background - March 10, 2006
The hunter of the north runs with the family in the ancient forests of north America.
Grey wolf at Wolf Haven Park in Washington State, US.
The big bad wolf - hardly any other animal has been linked to so
many negative characteristics and has made humans shudder as much
as the wolf.
These prejudices and their natural habitats being destroyed by
logging have seen their numbers in the wild drop alarmingly.
In reality, wolves are very shy, loyal and family animals. They
live in big family groups, they hunt and eat together and have a
distinct social behavior - no member of the pack stays hungry when
the prey is shared. Wolves are members of the dog family and prefer
hoofed animals as prey, such as deer, moose and wild goat.
They live in the diverse forests of North America and include
the boreal forest belt that stretches between Newfoundland and
Alaska, the coastal temperate rainforest of Alaska and Western
Canada, and the myriad of residual pockets of temperate forest
surviving in more remote regions.
The wolf also shares its home with indigenous people, grizzly
bears and pumas.
The ancient forests and their famous animals inhabitants need
