Boxes of medicine sit on the bedside table of Li Bairong (54 years old). He is from Shaoxing Sanjiang Village, an area that has been severely affected by water pollution. He has been diagnosed with late stage esophagus cancer, the exact causes are unknown, and is receiving treatment at the Oncological Department of Shaoxing no.2 People's Hospital. In February 2013, the Chinese government acknowledged for the first time the existence of 'cancer villages' linked to pollution from hazardous chemicals.
