I want to thank greenpeace for the independent data. I don't trust any data from anyone connected to this plant. They keep telling people on the West Coast of Oregon there is no danger. I'd really like some independent testing in my region too.

of commission for 2 weeks following the earthquake and some local authorities were refusing to test for radiation, but improving now.

2 issues seem to be largely absent from the debate on longer term radiation exposure.

1) Dust - the July-September period is dry and windy. The land around the nuclear plants will not be cultivated and rice paddies will probably remain unfilled with water. Clay particulates from paddies are particularly fine and easily dispersed by wind - this will provide a vector for further distribution. No govt plans are afoot (as far as I know) to deal with hundreds of thousands of tonnes of contaminated topsoil. Wind at a hundred meters is fairly continuous and can be in opposing directions from surface gusts - a complex phenomenom

2) Groundwater - rainy season in June/July, runoff, leaks from the plant etc are sure to leak into the groundwater. How far will that contamination spread, the geological makeup of Fukushima/Miyagi water table is not being discussed.
Irrigation is a longterm issue, forestry products also draw from deep water reserves. Also a large number of villages in the region draw water from wells (including our own). Infrastructure to clean. monitor or replace those will be incredibly expensive.

I hope you will be able to investigate these issues more and bring them to the public's attention.

It's really time our governments stop allowing companies (who want to make a buck and "provide a service") to create things that can do massive damage to, not only their area, but the country AND THE WORLD!

It is far beyond ridiculous that the same regulators that were to watch that this type of thing didn't happen were in bed with the company big wigs. This should not ever happen and should be grounds for a person being in jail for a long time.

It is beyond reason to not hold governmental agencies and the people who are behind their chosen ignorance of facts to not be held responsible. If a person is in charge of making sure this type of thing doesn't happen, HE OR SHE SHOULD BE PUNISHED when it does.

The world is being damaged by this Japanese "mistake" so we should just say, "Darn! You made a mistake?" NO! We need to not regulate but stop this type of "mistake" so that our children and our children's children have an opportunity to live in this world without being damaged and sick and required to protect themselves from the foolishness of those who came before.

Centuries ago, if a person did damage (like putting salt on an area), at least it was a small area--unforgiveable, but still only a small area. Now it is the world that is being salted!

Washington state now has radioactive iodine in milk. But "it's safe" according to regulators. How can we trust them at all after this?

Those who will be adversely affected if a product breaks should be the ones who decide if the product can be made at all.

The word "shima" in Japanese means "island." After seeing Fuku island disaster, I don't frankly think that nuclear is "safe" in any way, shape or form. I'm scared, worried and exhausted over what damage is being done to our environment, and our children, and our lives. It isn't fair that they profited from lower rates and now we are devastated from their disaster.

And will Japan pay us for damaging our air and soil? Sure, they will. [sarcasm intended]
