A few of our colleagues here in the Greenpeace Secret Mountain Laboratory thought there was a single source as well. They'd poke around in the back alleys of Technorati, then drop by the Webby Café to say "Hey! I found the reason Mister Splashy Pants won! This site, see, they were telling people to vote for him!"
But this is the information superhighway, kids. Everything is measureable.
If we open up our Google Analytics stats package, let's have a look at the top 500 referrers to the Mister Splashy Pants vote page. Why lookee there! No one site sent anything close to a majority of the 119,000+ votes that Mister Splash Pants got.
Treehugger gets a big Splashy Thanks as top of the heap, but Reddit actually drove the most votes.

The fact is, a pretty odd community of internet denizens owns this win, from the pranksters who think they pulled a fast one on Greenpeace, to fun-loving supporters of the name who think they trounced ecosnobs, to gen-u-ine whale lovers who saw Mister Splashy as the goofy poster child that draws big traffic to a worthy cause, to the Facebook Group of the name's original nominator, Omar Zayed.
