Executive summary: The loss of the world's wealth of biological diversity is occurring at an unprecedented rate. It is widely agreed that if we are to halt and reverse this disastrous trend an effective network of protected areas must be in place in every country, and throughout the world. The existing system of protected areas is not sufficient enough to maintain global biodiversity. The need for action to correct these deficiencies is urgent. Greenpeace calls on governments at the 7th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity to adopt a strong programme of work on protected areas.
