Greenpeace protests against US, Panama ships for plunder of Pacific tuna

Pacific Ocean– Activists from the Greenpeace ship Esperanza today painted “Fueling Plunder” and “Tuna Plunder” on the hull of Panamanian-flagged tanker MV Fong Seong 888 in protest against its role in fueling the unabated fishing operations in pockets of Pacific international waters that are home to vulnerable tuna stocks. The Fong Seong 888 was caught providing fuel to MFV American Legacy, one of the latest additions to the US purse seine fleet in the region.

Greenpeace confiscates Korean tuna fishing gear

Pacific Ocean – Activists from the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, campaigning to end the destruction of the world’s oceans, today confiscated fishing gear from Korean longline ship MFV Oryong 717 in the international waters of the Pacific which is proposed as a future marine reserve. The activists removed hooks and lines left by the tuna fishing fleet in waters where key tuna stocks are threatened with depletion.

Greenpeace calls on governments to support a ban on Bluefin Tuna Trade

Greenpeace activists on board the Rainbow Warrior today demanded immediate action to protect the endangered Mediterranean bluefin tuna from commercial extinction by deploying buoys marked ‘Crime Scene’ around cages holding bluefin tuna being fattened up for harvesting and then sold for export.

Urgent action by Japan needed to protect the Pacific tuna

Western Pacific Ocean – Activists from the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, campaigning to end the destruction of the world’s oceans, today unfurled banners saying “Marine Reserves Now” and ”No Return from Overfishing” after witnessing Japanese purse seiner Fukuichi Maru scoop tuna in a pocket of international waters in the Pacific where key tuna stocks are threatened with collapse.

Taiwanese ships caught illegally transferring tuna at sea

Western Pacific Ocean – Two Taiwanese longline tuna fishing vessels were today caught by Greenpeace in the act of illegally transferring fish at sea (1). Fishing vessels Her Hae and Jia Yu Fa were carrying tuna and shark fins, and were photographed while transferring tuna from one ship to another in a pocket of international waters between Papua New Guinea and the Federated States of Micronesia, an area proposed as a marine reserve. They abandoned their transshipment process and fled the area as the Greenpeace ship Esperanza approached the vicinity.

Greenpeace online petition shows market demand for sustainable Pacific skipjack tuna

Greenpeace has today announced that over 70 million tins of sustainable, pole-and-line-caught Pacific skipjack tuna have been pre-ordered as part of an online campaign to promote the development of sustainable and equitable pole-and-line skipjack fisheries in the South Pacific. The announcement comes on the eve of the 2nd Pacific Tuna Forum taking place in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where the future sustainability and development of the region’s tuna industry will be discussed.
