Activists demand governments stop sending nuclear waste to Russia

On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the world’s second largest radiation accident, at Mayak in the Southern Urals, Greenpeace Russia has released a special report about the ongoing impacts of the Mayak tragedy. On the anniversary itself, Greenpeace will join local people in a protest rally in the nearby city of Chelyabinsk, to call for the relocation of those still living in contaminated areas and an end to Russia’s plans to import and reprocess even more foreign waste at the Mayak site.

World Bank Group finances company involved in the illegal destruction of the Congo rainforest

The World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC) is financing a Singapore-based trading group - OLAM International Ltd - which has been involved in trading illegal timber in one of the world's last major rainforests in remote areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo, says Greenpeace. OLAM is today expected to report much improved results for the first half year, with net profits rising up to 29 percent.

Energy revolution investment

Investing in a renewable electricity future will save 10 times the fuel costs of a 'business as usual' fossil-fuelled scenario, saving $180 billion USD annually and cut CO2 emissions in half by 2030, according to a joint report by Greenpeace and the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) released today.

Illegal Timber Supplies Axed by B&Q

Companies supplying China with illegal timber were dealt a major blow today when the world's third largest home improvement retailer, B&Q, announced a scheme to root out illegal supplies and guarantee within three years all products will be from certified responsible forestry programmes.
