The second biggest nuclear disaster in history

Everybody knows that the biggest nuclear catastrophe in history was Chernobyl. But how many have heard of the second biggest? Today marks the fiftieth anniversary of a radiation nightmare.

Nuclear plant delayed

Designers of Finland's Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor knew as far back as 2001 that it must be able to withstand an airplane attack. That's what the Finnish public was promised when the construction license was issued. Yet today, the company announced further delays in construction due to problems with reinforcing the reactor building to withstand an airplane crash.

Earthquake, fire and nuclear leak in Japan

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the world's largest nuclear plant on Monday, causing a transformer fire. Since then, revelations have been coming out about spills and leaks at the plant.

Nuclear under fire

It's been a bad few weeks for the nuclear industry, especially in Germany. While the nuclear companies were lobbying to reverse the German nukes phase out, two German nuclear plants suffered a fire and emergency shut down.

Six Greenpeace activists continue their two-day occupation of a 100-meter-high construction crane at the heart of the reactor Olkiluoto 3 construction site in Finland. The activists have positioned themselves 80 meter up in the crane. The occupation is a protest against the 1500 safety problems that have been revealed during construction of the plant. Olkiluoto nuclear plant protest continues

On Monday, activists blockaded the entrance to the Olkiluoto nuclear plant construction site - briefly shutting down a project already massively over budget and plagued by more than one thousand reported breaches of safety standards.

Spain says "Adios" to nuclear power

The nuclear industry recently launched a multi-million dollar campaign to try and revive the most expensive, dangerous, and polluting way to boil water ever invented. Spain is having none of it. The nation's president has confirmed that the country's 8 operating plants will be phased out in favour of clean, renewable energy.
