Thai fruit exports worldwide under threat from GMO papaya

7 July 2005 – Greenpeace activists today dumped thousands of papayas at the offices of Thailand’s Department of Agriculture in a protest against the government’s utter disregard for consumer and environmental protection from threats caused by the spread of illegal genetically engineered (GE) papaya in Thailand. The threat also concerns many European countries that import papaya from Thailand; it is possible that GE contaminated papaya is already in European markets.

Illegal GE papaya in Thailand has antibiotic resistant genes

30 June 2005 – Greenpeace today revealed new laboratory results which show that the illegal genetically engineered (GE) papaya sold by the Department of Agriculture contains antibiotic resistant genes that contradict the standards of the World Health Organization and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO/WHO Codex).

GE papaya contamination spreads to central and eastern regions

Bangkok, 1 June 2005 – Greenpeace today revealed that papaya samples from farms in the provinces of Rayong and Kampaengpetch have tested positive as genetically engineered (GE) variety, confirming suspicions of the widening scale of GE contamination in Thailand’s papaya farms.
