Axis of oil dominates summit

Greenpeace, BP agree?

Greenpeace and industry coalition World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) were 'fighting like cats and dogs' ten years ago in Rio, in the words of Greenpeace Political Director Remi Parmentier. Today, they agreed to put aside their differences to join in sending one historic signal: business and the environmental community are united in demanding governments adopt a global framework on climate change.

The difference is the spirit

Within the halls of Sandton, non-governmental organisations and press have been effectively excluded from all deliberations of the Earth Summit's now as they work late into the night. The mood is dark, as we watch commitment after commitment fall victim to the slow, soporific process of largely elderly men turning firm targets into watered down recommendations, calls for action into loophole-infested statements of intent. Heads of State arrive tomorrow, and none of them want to do the embarrassing dirty work of undermining the Earth Summit. Many would prefer to have that done well before they arrive.

Earth scores against WTO

Yesterday evening, while the industry lobbyists were eating sushi and drinking champagne around a spectacular swimming pool, Greenpeace and other non-governmental organisations were taking action inside the halls of the Earth Summit.

Summit 'flop' says fish

Our expert marine correspondent C. Creature is in Johannesburg this week and is reporting from the Earth Summit that there is something fishy about “the first victory of the summit” and the great claims to protect threatened fish stocks.

The Future, Powered by?

While government delegates returned home from the failed Earth Summit, some of the dirty industry lobbyists that ensured that no action was taken by the Summit hot footed it to the World Petroleum Congress taking place in Rio de Janeiro. Yes, the same place where 10 years ago the first Earth Summit brought hope that finally the world was waking up to see the damage we are causing to the world's environment.

US just being climate change 'moron'

Canada and New Zealand are doing more to combat climate change by ratifying the Kyoto Protocol this week putting the global agreement to cut greenhouse gases one step closer to reality. But the US and Australian governments are proving they are just morons by refusing to ratify the international treaty they signed five years ago.

Oil giant tries again to silence protests

Oil giant Esso is attempting to sue Greenpeace for more than 225,000 Euros over a peaceful protest against Esso's continuing sabotage of international efforts to protect the climate. Rather than change its damaging practices Esso is seeking to silence protests in the favourite manner of corporate criminals - through the courts.

Exxon Valdez disaster- 15 years of lies

It is fifteen years since the devastating Exxon Valdez oil spill, which saw 11 million gallons of oil pouring into a pristine wilderness area in Prince William Sound, Alaska. US oil giant ExxonMobil should come clean about the true state of the site of the spill as new research shows that the Sound is still suffering from adverse effects of the massive oil pollution.

Why climb a 700 foot smokestack?

The Bush administration has trashed US clean air laws by allowing power stations to install new equipment without adding pollution controls, and permitting coal-fired power plants to continue to release tons of mercury. This dirty energy also wreaks havoc on the environment, causing global warming, acid rain, and smog. That's why our activists are 700ft up a chimney in Pennsylvania to call for clean energy now!

Dodgy deals and irresponsible care

A recently leaked document has revealed the secret plans of the American Chemistry Council to trash anti-pollution laws in California. The internal memo, a proposal from PR firm Nichols-Dezenhall, outlines tactics such as the creation of phoney front groups and spying on activists to undermine pioneering laws that protect the environment. Unfortunately the Chemistry Council is just one of many industry front groups dedicated to making sure nothing interferes with corporate profits.
