The future of the world's species at the mercy of trade if governments fail to act

Ahead of today's opening of the 13th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), Greenpeace reminds delegates of their task to safeguard the future of the world’s wildlife.

Greenpeace demands Malaysian government to stop criminal Ramin trade

Greenpeace activists today chained themselves to the gates of the Malaysian embassy demanding that country's government to take a firm public stance against the laundering and global trade of Ramin timber at the international meeting of endangered species CITES this week.

Greenpeace activists protest outside the Japanese embassy in Bangkok, calling on Japan to vote in favour of measures to protect marine species. The protest took place as delegates meet in Bangkok for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Some 166 nations are participating in the meeting that will end on 14 October. Japan has consistently sidestepped motions to implement protection measures for marine wildlife. Enlarge Image

Government of Japan: Don't empty our oceans

Greenpeace activists today held a peaceful demonstration in front of the Japanese embassy to demand that the government of Japan vote in favour of the conservation of marine species at the 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (1).

A group of Greenpeace activists hang a banner reading 'Don't Trade Away the Planet' from the Rama IX bridge in the Thai capital of Bangkok. The action was designed to encourage delegates at the CITES conference, which closes in Bangkok today, to actively implement and enforce the positive decisions that were taken at the convention. CITES ends, real work begins

As the 13th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (1) drew to a close, Greenpeace congratulated the delegates on the major steps taken to regulate trade of commercially valuable species. According to Greenpeace the hard work is just beginning.
