Greenpeace hangs nuclear banner on Eiffel Tower

As the Union for the Mediterranean organised by French president Nicolas Sarkozy (1) launched in Paris today, Fifteen Greenpeace activists today hung a banner of a nuclear symbol on the Eiffel Tower (2). The banner was placed in circle of golden stars representing the EU. The stars sponsored by French state nuclear company Areva, have been on the tower since France took over the EU presidency on 1 July.

Greenpeace today condemned French President, Nicolas Sarkozy's announcement of plans to build a second European Pressurised nuclear Reactor (EPR) in France (1). The decision comes just three days after France took over the EU Presidency.

Two Greenpeace activists this evening unfurled a five by seven metre banner reading "Stop Nuclear Madness – Energy Revolution Now" during the opening ceremony of the World Energy Congress in Rome, Italy, attended by Romano Prodi, Italian Prime Minister.
