GE papaya in the dock in Thailand court case

Greenpeace activists dump thousands of papayas at the offices of Thailand's Department of Agriculture in Bangkok, protesting against the government's disregard for protection of consumers and the environment against threats caused by the spread of illegal genetically engineered (GE) papaya in Thailand. The threat also concerns consumers in many European and Asian countries that import papaya from Thailand, such as the Netherlands, Germany, France, UK, Belgium, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, Georgia, China, Japan and Hong Kong. The end of organic crops?

"This year I will again sow maize. But if it is again contaminated [with genetically engineered maize] I will abandon the growing of organic maize. It is obvious that I cannot carry on my shoulders the episodes of contamination like these, year after year."

Swiss vote NO to GE

Last Sunday, people turned up at polling booths across Switzerland in a referendum to determine whether genetically engineered (GE) crops and animals can be grown in the alpine nation during the next five years. Their verdict in each and every one of the three main languages was the same, nein, non, no, to GE.
