Several local farmers and native Hawaiian activists joined Greenpeace experts today in decontaminating an organic farm in Hawaii that has been tainted with genetically engineered (GE) papaya from nearby commercial farms. The farm was sealed off with signs reading, 'GE Papaya Restricted Area' as volunteers in hazmat suits removed trees, fruits and seeds from the scene.

Polish GE seed ban

Greenpeace welcomed the ban on the sale of genetically engineered (GE) seeds, which was approved yesterday by the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski. The signing by the President was the final step for the GE ban to come into force, the legislation was approved by both chambers of the Polish Parliament in previous weeks.

Greenpeace today revealed that genetically engineered (GE) papaya has been grown for at least 12 months on a farm in the province of Khon Kaen in a widening GE contamination scandal and violation of the country's GE ban. The revelation is part of the environmental group's ongoing investigation of GE papaya seeds illegally sold by the agricultural research station of the Department of Agriculture (DOA) in the said province.

Greenpeace, today, sealed off an experimental field of genetically engineered (GE) papaya at the agricultural research station of the Department of Agriculture in the province of Khon Kaen, declaring it the source of genetic contamination of one of the country's most important staple foods.
