Calling on the EU to save our food

European Environment Ministers were asked to agree on strict controls ensuring food safety today, by our activists in Brussels. A giant banner displaying a ‘scary’ genetically modified corn plant and bearing the slogan Stop GMOs’ was dropped from a building on Schuman square (at the quarter of European Commission and European Council buildings) as dozens GM maize caricatures were laid around the street - highlighting the risks posed by genetically modified organisms such as maize.

Mice! Forget about birth control - try GE maize instead!

Mice fed on genetically-engineered maize produce fewer offspring than those fed on natural foods, according to a new study published today by the Austrian government.

Romania says 'No' to GE and declares its future organic

In an historic move, the Romanian Government today announced it will ban genetically engineered (GE) maize and embrace organic agriculture. The move is particularly significant as GE maize is the only commercially cultivated GE crop permitted in Europe.

Scandal: Greenpeace exposes illegal GE rice in China

In a startling development that may have repercussions on exports of China's biggest crop, Greenpeace has uncovered genetically engineered (GE) rice, unapproved for human consumption, that appears to have been planted and sold illegally in China for the last two years.

Failures of Golden Rice

It was a great sales pitch: adopt this genetically engineered rice, and it'll save millions of children from blindness! It will end Vitamin A deficiency. They called it "Golden Rice." But if you queried their claims, or had concerns about possible genetic contamination of a global staple food, you were an environmental extremist who cared more about trees than children. It was, and is, fool's gold.

What do the major European food retailers and producers think about genetically engineered (GE) food? In a new Greenpeace report, we asked them. Of the 60 top companies we contacted, 49 of them won't use GE in their own brands, and they've gone on record saying so.

We warned the Thai government over a year ago not to play with genetically engineered (GE) papaya but they didn't listen. Although trials of the engineered food crop are banned, it seems they couldn't resist having a go themselves. Now they have left the whole country's papaya crop wide open to contamination.
