Quit coal, save the climate! 2008 campaign highlights

Quit coal – save the climate. It's a simple message, but it's also an urgent one. Coal, the dirtiest of all fossil fuels is the single greatest contributor to the climate crisis. In 2008, we've been taking the "quit coal" message across the world, the campaign has been spearheaded by our flagship the Rainbow Warrior.

On the ‘Global Day of Action on Climate Change’ Greenpeace highlighted the threat from global warming to the river Ganga and pointed out that the solution is a global Energy [R]evolution that called for efficient use of energy and a shift away from coal to renewable energy sources. Global day of action - 2008

People across the world took to the streets for a Global Day of Action on Saturday, to tell the governments meeting in Poznan, Poland for crucial UN climate negotiations, that the world is watching them.

In the run up to the Poznan Cop14 climate summit, approximately twenty Greenpeace activists tip coal from a tipper truck and display banners reading 'Get serious, quit coal!' outside the Sheraton hotel, where the Summit on Sectoral Cooperation is being held. Greenpeace is targeting the meeting attended coal companies, heavy industry and at least 20 industry ministers by releasing its "True Cost of Coal" report, outlining the global cost of coal today. The True Cost of Coal

If we are to avert catastrophic climate change the world must quit coal. But, the industry and the powerful forces which rely on it will not go down without a fight. Today, in Warsaw, Greenpeace, provided them with two reminders of why we should quit coal.

Energy Revolution Now!

Greenpeace has published the second edition of the Energy [R]evolution scenario, updated with the latest economic, technical and population data. The Energy [R]evolution is the only energy scenario which shows how the world can cut emissions, phase out nuclear power, save money and maintain global economic development; without fuelling catastrophic climate change. All we need to kick start this plan is bold energy policy from world leaders.
