A Time Comes: What it means to take action

Greenpeace activists cleared in landmark global warming trial

In an unprecedented trial a UK Crown Court jury has acquitted six Greenpeace UK volunteers of criminal damage to a coal-fired power plant. The jury, consisting of representatives from the British public, found their actions justified when considering the damage to property caused around the world by CO2 emissions from the plant.

Greenpeace activists in the dock: Experts take ‘the stand’ on climate change

As expert witnesses go, they don’t come any better than Professor James Hansen, one of the world’s leading climate scientists and Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. On Wednesday, he was called to give evidence before a UK Court on the threat posed by Kingsnorth coal-fired power station to the world’s climate.

Six Greenpeace activists are being charged with criminal damage after they took action last October, to highlight the threat posed by Kingsnorth.

Activists shut down coal plant

Just after 5am this morning, 50 Greenpeace UK volunteers went into Kingsnorth coal fired power station. One group immobilised the huge conveyor belts carrying coal into the plant then chained themselves to the machinery. A second group is climbing up the chimney, with supplies to hold it for several days and force the power station off the national grid.

Justice for the Tokyo Two - justice for whales, coming our way?

Justice is starting to go the Tokyo Two way: A court in Aomori, Japan, has delivered a series of setbacks to the prosecution in the trial of Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki (the activists known as the Tokyo Two) - and the Japanese government's attempts to cover up an embezzlement scandal within the whaling industry.

Whaling, lies and cover-ups must stop

Shrouded in the early morning gloom, the Japanese whaling fleet factory ship, Nisshin Maru, crept back into port without the usual fanfare. In fact, the only greeting party was comprised of our activists.

Japanese Whaling: The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth

We have lodged an appeal against Japanese government censorship, calling on the Fisheries Agency of Japan (FAJ) to release uncensored documentation of whale meat sales.

Previously we obtained these documents through a 2008 Freedom of Information request but the FAJ had blacked out large sections so that almost every line was obscured.

Justice for whales, justice for Greenpeace

An ancient Japanese legend says that anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes will have their heart's desire come true. On 16 February, 1000 paper whales were delivered to the Japanese embassy in Stockholm with a message "Free Junichi and Toru".

From deliveries of origami whales in Sweden, to giant wooden handcuffs in Hong Kong and caged prisoners in Turkey, activists from around the world have been visiting Japanese embassies and consulates this week to call for justice as the Tokyo Two faced their first formal court hearing.
