Greenpeace parody highlights conflict within Commission between industry profits and science

Greenpeace is today staging a parody protest outside the EU Commission’s Berlaymont headquarters, posing as lobbyists for companies that produce genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and are trying to get them approved for sale and planting in Europe.

Greenpeace urges France to ban GE crops and calls on European governments to follow suit

Greenpeace activists today hung a 12 by 3 metre banner reading “Ban GMO’s NOW” on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris urging the French government to ban genetically modified organisms. The government is expected to decide in the next few days on the future regulation of genetically modified, or genetically engineered, crops.

Greenpeace quarantines Braila Island in Romania, to prevent spread of illegal GMO Soya contamination

Greenpeace activists today put Braila island, on the Danube, under quarantine, after Greenpeace field investigations revealed that illegal Genetically Modified (GMO) Soya, is being grown and harvested there. It is illegal for EU member states, including Romania, to cultivate GMO Soya.Greenpeace calls on the Romanian government and the European Commission to act immediately to locate and destroy all of the illegally cultivated GMO Soya.

New study reveals signs of toxicity of GE maize approved for human consumption

Laboratory rats, fed with a genetically engineered (GE) maize produced by Monsanto, have shown signs of toxicity in kidney and liver, according to a new study.(1) This is the first time that a GE product which has been cleared for use as food for humans and animals has shown signs of toxic effects on internal organs.
