Consumer power scored another victory recently with the announcement from electronics giant Samsung that it plans to phase out hazardous chemicals in its products. Seeing its brand-name products graded red - as containing hazardous chemicals - on the Greenpeace database, prompted the company to do the right thing on dangerous chemicals.

Isabel Allende goes ancient forest friendly

Last year, Harry Potter went Ancient Forest friendly in Canada. Now, for the first time, a major Spanish publisher has taken steps towards being ancient-forest friendly, with the release of Isabel Allende's new book printed on recycled and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. Isabel Allende is calling for her publishers around the world to follow suit.

UK Publisher MQP goes Ancient Forest friendly

Cue applause for UK publisher MQ Publications (MQP). They decided to phase out paper produced from the world's last remaining ancient forests from its books, and their latest title is 'The Armchair Environmentalist' which has been printed, of course, on 100 percent recycled paper.

Conversation with a publisher

Michelle Benjamin is a publisher at Raincoast books - a book publishing and distribution company on the West coast of Canada. They publish in a range of genres, both fiction and non-fiction - but most famously the Canadian editions of the Harry Potter books. She's in Europe for the Frankfurt book fair (the largest in the world). On the way, she stopped by the Greenpeace office here in Amsterdam, and took time to answer some of our questions about publishing and the environment...
