Quit Coal campaign completes Thailand tour

After successful campaigns in New Zealand and the Philippines, the Rainbow Warrior spent 21 days in Thailand as part of the "Quit Coal, Lead the Energy [R]evolution Tour" promoting solutions to climate change. The tour included human banners, port blockades and a visit to the Ministry of Energy.

Greenpeace today challenged the Ministry of Energy (MOE) to stop construction of new coal power plants in Thailand and shift its resources instead to the development of clean renewable energy systems to help combat climate change and achieve national energy security.

Stand-off in Maptaphut

Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior today staged a peaceful protest against the expansion of a Belgian-owned coal power plant in Mapthaphut, Rayong province in Thailand, anchoring a few meters off the coal wharf and unfurling banners saying “Quit Coal” and ”Coal = Climate Change”. The ship was greeted by tug boats and coal plant personnel who fired water cannons as it entered the coal port.

Greenpeace, Prachuab communities form human installation against coal

Hundreds of residents from Prachuab Khirikhan joined Greenpeace activists and the crew of Rainbow Warrior to form a human installation proclaiming ‘Quit Coal’ at Thapsakae beach today. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is proposing to build a 4000 MW coal-fired power plant in Thapsakae but the communities are opposing it due to concerns on pollution and climate change.

That was the statement of Governor Joey Sarte Salceda, setting the tone for our one month Quit Coal tour of the Philippines. Since the Rainbow Warrior arrived in the country we’ve taken our Quit Coal message to the places it needed to be heard, and generated real progress on the ground and in the corridors of power.
