The Sauron White House

Jury for Bush vs. Greenpeace

A US federal judge in Miami today granted our motion for a jury trial against unprecedented criminal charges, setting the stage for a courtroom battle that could have a significant impact on Americans' rights to peaceful protest. In July 2003, the Justice Department charged Greenpeace under an obscure 1872 law against "sailormongering" for a 2002 protest. Judge Adalberto Jordan, agreeing with Greenpeace's assertion, found that "the indictment is a rare - and maybe unprecedented - prosecution of an advocacy group" for free speech-related conduct.

Potter book saves trees

The boy with the lightening bolt on his forehead is back. And this time, Harry's not only saving Muggles and Hogwarts from the evil powers of Voldemort, he's also working a little magic for the world's ancient and endangered forests.

Alaskan rainforest faces decimation

We've sent the largest ship in our fleet, the MV Esperanza, to Southeast Alaska to expose the impacts of industrial logging on the the Tongass National Forest (TNF), the largest forest in the US and one of the most diverse and irreplaceable habitats anywhere in the world.

Conversation with a publisher

Michelle Benjamin is a publisher at Raincoast books - a book publishing and distribution company on the West coast of Canada. They publish in a range of genres, both fiction and non-fiction - but most famously the Canadian editions of the Harry Potter books. She's in Europe for the Frankfurt book fair (the largest in the world). On the way, she stopped by the Greenpeace office here in Amsterdam, and took time to answer some of our questions about publishing and the environment...

Bush targets Greenpeace

In a move unprecedented in its history, the US government has indicted an entire organization - Greenpeace USA, Inc. (the Greenpeace entity in the US) - for the peaceful protest activities of its supporters.

Finland forests

Time is running out for the old-growth forests of Finland. The vast majority of Finland's valuable old-growth is owned by the state and logged by the state-owned company Metsähallitus. Metsähallitus' logging practices include clearcutting, logging in habitats of threatened and vulnerable species and logging in areas of special scenic or cultural value - including in areas that are critical for the reindeer herding of the indigenous Sami people.

Esperanza denied Miami dock space

Our work in the Amazon continues after a successful campaign to expose gross illegalities in Brazil's mahogany trade. In November 2002, we achieved an historic victory when governments of the world agreed to give the highly vulnerable and sought-after tree greater international protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. But corruption, the silencing of dissent, forced labor, and murder are still commonplace within the Amazon basin's remote forest products business.
