Humanitarian aid organised by Medecins Sans Frontieres and intended for Aceh in North Sumatra being loaded on to the Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior, en route to Banda Aceh. The shipment includes food, water sanitation equipment, mosquito nets, generators, cooking fuel and MSF base camp equipment. Aceh province was one of the areas most severely affected by the December 26, 2004 earthquake when tsunami waves hit the coastal areas. The Rainbow Warrior is cut adrift during and action against a coal-fired power plant in Thailand.

Waters in Lam Takong Dam in Korat, Nakhon Ratchasima province of Thailand have dried up due to prolonged drought, allowing villagers to camp inside the dam to catch the remaining fish. Severe water shortage and damage to agriculture has affected millions. Enlarge Image

Europe’s secret nuclear waste dumping in Russia revealed

Twenty Greenpeace activists blocked the loading of nuclear waste on to the Russian freighter, Kapitan Kuroptev, in the northern French port of le Havre. The ship was preparing to transport more than 450 tons of radioactive uranium waste originating from the Pierrelatte uranium enrichment plant in the Rhone Valley.

Activists attacked in Philippines global warming protest

One of our activists participating in a peaceful protest against a coal power plant outside Manila has been horrendously beaten by local plant security, who drew weapons and fired warning shots at people armed with nothing but a banner. Four other Greenpeace activists are also in hospital after having stones thrown at them.

Amazon Drought

The Amazon is experiencing the worst drought in more than 40 years, and experts believe that global warming and massive deforestation are to blame.

The first bridge over the Yellow River - even in the rainy season the water level is low. The Yellow River is relied upon by 120 million Chinese for food irrigation, industry and other uses. Global warming at the source of the river is already leading to it drying up. Enlarge Image
