In October 2005 Greenpeace UK published a league table that ranked UK supermarkets on the basis of their seafood sourcing policies – this laid the ground-work for Greenpeace’s sustainable seafood campaign.

In early 2006 Greenpeace France and Austria joined the work. In May 2006 Greenpeace Austria published its report ranking the seafood purchasing policies of Austrian supermarkets, which was followed up with personal presentations to senior staff at all companies. Greenpeace Germany and Netherlands joined the campaign in 2007. Greenpeace Netherlands published its first ranking of the top 18 supermarkets in September and Greenpeace Germany published its report ranking of the top eleven German supermarkets in December 2007.
