The Greenpeace Forests for Climate (Tropical Deforestation Emission Reduction Mechanism TDERM) proposal for a hybrid market-linked fund would provide the financing needed to help protect the world's remaining tropical forests by reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD).
This new mechanism would become part of the next (post 2012) phase of the Kyoto Protocol, although financing could be made available as early as 2009. A critical element of this proposal or any REDD mechanism would be to attain both climate and biodiversity objectives in a manner that fully respects the rights of the local and indigenous peoples.
