Guide to Greener electronics - Toxic chemicals criteria in depth

The issue of toxicity is overarching. Until the use of toxic substances is eliminated, it is impossible to secure ‘safe’ recycling. For this reason, the points awarded to corporate practice on chemicals are weighted more heavily than criteria on recycling. There are five criteria on chemicals as compared to four on waste and double points for vinyl plastic-free (PVC) and BFR-free models. This document explains these criteria in depth.

Green Guide to Electronics: Fifth Edition

We first released our 'Guide to Greener Electronics' in August 2006. The guide ranks the 14 top manufacturers of personal computers and mobile phones according to their policies on toxic chemicals and recycling.

In this fifth issue of the Guide, Nokia maintains top spot with Sony Ericsson close behind. Dell and Lenovo tie for third place. Sony is the biggest mover and together with LGE has moved out of the red zone. Apple, Panasonic, Acer, Toshiba and Samsung move down the ranking for failing to make any additional improvements. HP is the only constant faller in the guide and is now in 13th position.

Green Guide to Electronics: Fourth Edition

We first released our 'Guide to Greener Electronics' in August 2006. The guide ranks the 14 top manufacturers of personal computers and mobile phones according to their policies on toxic chemicals and recycling.

In this fourth issue of the Guide, Nokia regained the lead, with Dell and Lenovo tying for second place, followed by Sony-Ericsson and Samsung. Apple made the biggest jump from last to the10th place while Sony is the biggest loser in the race, languishing at the bottom of the ranking along with LG, both penalized for ‘double standards’ on their waste policies.
